Alan Shearer believes Aston Villa’s February slump could ultimately derail their hopes of European qualification — and he has identified a worrying trend ahead of huge clashes with Chelsea and Manchester United.
Villa’s 2-0 defeat to Wolves at the end of the month capped off a disappointing run that saw Unai Emery’s side win just once in five Premier League matches. Draws and losses replaced the sharp, controlled performances that had propelled them into the top three earlier in the campaign.
“This Is The Month”
Speaking on Match of the Day, Shearer warned that February may prove decisive in the race for Europe.
“If they don’t make it, this is the month that they’ll look back on and think, yeah, that’s cost us,” he said.
Despite remaining third in the table behind Arsenal and Manchester City, the chasing pack is closing in. Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea are all within striking distance, and momentum appears to be shifting away from Villa at a critical stage of the season.
Energy Levels a Concern
Shearer was particularly struck by Villa’s performance against Wolves.
“They looked very tired, very leggy and lacking energy,” he added. “So much of their good play this season has been very different to that, but it’s been very different of late.”
That observation may be the biggest red flag for Emery. Villa’s rise has been built on intensity, sharp transitions and collective organisation. If fatigue is creeping in — whether physical or mental — it threatens to undermine everything that made them successful.
With European competition earlier in the campaign and a demanding domestic schedule, squad depth is now being tested. The next fortnight could define whether Villa are genuine contenders for Champions League qualification or merely part of the chasing group.
Defining Fixtures Ahead
Upcoming matches against Chelsea and Manchester United now carry enormous weight. United could even leapfrog Villa depending on results, tightening the pressure further.
A positive response would reassert Villa’s authority in the top-four race. Another stumble, however, would validate Shearer’s warning and potentially swing the race decisively.
Emery’s Balancing Act
Unai Emery has earned enormous credit for Villa’s transformation over the past two seasons. Yet maintaining momentum at the business end of a campaign is often the hardest step.
Rotation, tactical tweaks and perhaps a psychological reset may be required to rediscover the spark that powered Villa through the first half of the season.
For now, they remain in third place. But as Shearer pointed out, if European football slips away in May, February’s faltering form — and the visible dip in energy — will be remembered as the turning point.
