Manchester United are increasingly confident they can strike a summer deal for Amadou Onana, with suggestions a transfer could benefit all parties.

The Red Devils are preparing for midfield changes ahead of next season, with Casemiro already confirming he will depart Old Trafford at the end of the campaign. Strengthening in the centre of the park is therefore a priority, and Onana has emerged as a leading target.

Positive signs over potential deal

According to former Everton and Aston Villa chief executive Keith Wyness, United would have a “good chance” of reaching an agreement if they firm up their interest.

Speaking about the situation, Wyness indicated the Belgium international would likely command a fee in the region of £50million — similar to what Aston Villa paid to sign him from Everton in 2024.

Onana impressed during his time at Goodison Park and has continued to develop at Villa Park. Wyness believes the 24-year-old possesses the mentality and technical quality required to thrive at Old Trafford.

He described Onana as a “classy” and “underrated” midfielder who combines physical presence with composure in possession — traits United have lacked at times this season.

A midfield reshuffle on the cards?

Villa, meanwhile, may be open to reshaping their midfield options if the right offer arrives. While Onana brings both steel and elegance, there is a sense that Unai Emery’s side could look to add a more combative profile should they cash in.

For United, the deal would form part of a broader summer rebuild. A new defensive midfielder is expected to be one of several additions as the club look to return to consistent Champions League contention.

Mason Mount interest adds intrigue

There could also be movement in the opposite direction.

Mason Mount has struggled for both form and fitness since his move to Manchester United, and Villa are believed to retain an interest in the England international. A change of scenery could help the 29-year-old rediscover his best level, with Fulham also monitoring his situation.

While no formal bid has yet been tabled for Onana, the early indications suggest United are positioning themselves strongly ahead of the summer window.

If negotiations progress as expected, Old Trafford could soon welcome a midfielder many believe has the tools to flourish in red.
