Nottingham Forest manager Vitor Pereira has admitted he is unsure whether Nicolo Savona will play again this season, casting further doubt over the club’s defensive options.
The Italian full-back has been sidelined for several months following surgery, and Pereira’s latest comments suggest there is still no clear return date.
Speaking in his press conference, Pereira said: “I really don’t know if he will play again this season. After the surgery, they will say something and will inform us, but it is difficult for him.”
The update comes as a blow for Forest, particularly with the squad already stretched in the full-back positions.
A Promising Spell Interrupted
Savona, 25, had been settling well at the City Ground after joining from Juventus. He stepped up earlier in the campaign when Ola Aina required hamstring surgery, providing solid cover and balance on the flank.
Before his injury setback, Savona made 14 Premier League appearances and scored two important goals, including strikes against Manchester United and Liverpool. His contributions both defensively and going forward had made him an increasingly reliable option.
However, he has not featured since completing 90 minutes in a 1-0 defeat away at Braga, and Pereira has yet to see him play since taking charge.
Full-Back Depth Under Pressure
Forest’s lack of depth at full-back is now becoming a growing concern. Neco Williams has faced criticism for recent performances, while Aina is still managing his fitness after injury.
With crucial fixtures ahead, the absence of Savona limits Pereira’s rotation options and flexibility in defence.
The manager must now look for alternative solutions, whether through tactical adjustments or relying more heavily on the players currently available.
Season Hanging in the Balance
Savona had pledged to give everything for Forest when he arrived, and his early performances suggested he could play a key role in the club’s campaign.
For now, though, uncertainty surrounds his recovery. Pereira’s comments indicate that Forest may have to prepare for the possibility of finishing the season without him.
