West Ham United are reportedly keeping close tabs on Rangers centre-back Emmanuel Fernandez ahead of a potential summer transfer move.
The 24-year-old defender has emerged as one of the standout performers in the Scottish Premiership this season after establishing himself as a key player at Ibrox. Standing at 6ft 5ins, Fernandez has impressed both defensively and offensively, scoring five goals in just 19 league starts since becoming a regular in the Rangers lineup.
Fernandez only joined Rangers last summer from Peterborough United in a deal reportedly worth £2.5 million. At the time, the move raised eyebrows among some supporters due to the defender’s relatively modest career path, which included progressing through the youth system at Gillingham and loan spells at lower-league sides such as Barnet and Spalding United.
However, his development at Rangers has proven many doubters wrong.
Danny Rohl Unlocks Fernandez’s Potential
Fernandez initially struggled for regular opportunities under former Rangers boss Russell Martin, who handed him just two starts during his tenure at the club.
Since the arrival of manager Danny Röhl, however, the towering defender has flourished. Röhl’s faith in Fernandez has paid off, with the centre-back becoming a regular starter and an important presence in both boxes.
His rapid rise has not gone unnoticed, with reports suggesting West Ham scouts have been closely monitoring his performances and could make a move once the summer transfer window opens.
Rangers Open to Selling for the Right Price
Despite Fernandez’s growing importance to the squad, Rangers could be willing to sanction a sale if the right offer arrives. The Scottish club would likely aim to make a significant profit on the defender, having signed him for a relatively modest fee just a year ago.
With West Ham seeking to strengthen their defensive options ahead of next season, Fernandez’s physical presence, aerial dominance, and goal threat could make him an attractive option for the Premier League side.
Peterborough Praise ‘Colossus’ Fernandez
Fernandez’s quality was already clear during his time at Peterborough. Club chairman Darragh MacAnthony previously described the defender as a “colossus” during the 2024/25 campaign.
“Manny is a colossus,” MacAnthony said. “He’s been our best defender this season. People talk about what he can’t do, but I want to talk about what he can do. He’s not just a great defender, he’s also a great organiser and talker. Off the pitch he’s a gentle giant, but on it he’s aggressive.”
Rangers currently sit third in the Scottish Premiership table, six points behind leaders Heart of Midlothian, although they still have a game in hand.
As the summer transfer window approaches, Fernandez’s continued performances could determine whether Rangers can keep hold of their defensive star or if West Ham decide to step up their interest.
