Speculation surrounding the future of Unai Emery continues to grow, but former Manchester United defender Gary Neville believes the current Aston Villa boss is unlikely to leave Villa Park for Old Trafford.
Neville has praised Emery as an “exceptional” coach but insists the Spaniard is unlikely to replace interim manager Michael Carrick at United next season.
The debate intensified after United defeated Villa 3–1 in a recent Premier League clash at Old Trafford.
Carragher Backed Emery for the Job
Before the match, former Liverpool defender and pundit Jamie Carragher suggested Emery should be a leading candidate for the United job.
Carragher argued that the Villa boss has proven his credentials across Europe and could be the right figure to lead the Red Devils into a new era.
Emery’s reputation has been built on success across several top European clubs, including spells at Sevilla FC, Paris Saint-Germain, and Arsenal.
However, Neville does not believe the United hierarchy will make that move.
Neville: Emery Is “Exceptional”
Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville was full of praise for Emery’s coaching ability and experience in European competitions.
According to the former United captain, Emery ranks among the most accomplished managers currently working in the Premier League.
“He should be in contention because I’ve said before I think he’s the second-best manager in the league when it comes to experience in Europe after Pep Guardiola,” Neville explained.
He also acknowledged that other elite managers such as Mikel Arteta and Arne Slot would also have strong claims in that discussion.
Despite the praise, Neville insisted that Emery may not be the type of appointment United are looking to make.
Why Neville Thinks United Won’t Hire Emery
Neville believes United’s decision could depend heavily on how well Carrick performs during his interim spell in charge.
If Carrick succeeds in guiding the club into the UEFA Champions League places, Neville expects the club to back the former midfielder permanently.
“If Manchester United finish in the Champions League – which I think they will – I don’t think they will take Michael Carrick out and put Unai Emery in,” Neville said.
He also suggested that United’s leadership might view Emery’s previous spell at Arsenal as a potential risk.
The Spaniard’s tenure in North London was mixed, and Neville believes the club could hesitate to make such a bold change.
Only Elite Managers Could Replace Carrick
Neville went further by claiming that Carrick would only lose the job if one of the absolute elite managers in world football became available.
He referenced names like Carlo Ancelotti and Luis Enrique as examples of the type of appointment United might consider.
While he included Emery among the top-tier coaches, Neville believes the Villa boss sits just below that elite group.
“Unai Emery is exceptional and he’s proved himself all over Europe and won trophies everywhere,” Neville said.
“But maybe just slightly below that level of Champions League and major league-winning managers.”

For Aston Villa supporters, Neville’s comments could come as reassurance.
Emery has transformed the club since arriving at Villa Park, turning them into a consistent challenger for European places and improving their competitiveness in domestic competitions.
