Attila Szalai’s career trajectory serves as a fascinating case study in how crucial timing and the right environment are for a footballer’s development. A few years ago, the Hungarian centre-back was one of the most highly regarded young defenders in Europe, linked with clubs like Chelsea and Newcastle United, with many expecting him to take the next step into a top-five league. However, instead of securing a move to the Premier League or another elite competition at the height of his demand, Szalai remained at Fenerbahce, where he was a key player but perhaps outgrew his surroundings. By the time he eventually moved to the Bundesliga with Hoffenheim in a £10 million transfer, the momentum that once surrounded his name had faded. His spell in Germany quickly turned into a nightmare, leading to questions about whether he missed his best opportunity for success.

One of the biggest “what if” scenarios in his career is Leeds United’s reported interest back in 2021. At the time, Marco Rossi, the head coach of the Hungarian national team, openly advocated for Szalai to join Marcelo Bielsa at Elland Road. Rossi was convinced that under Bielsa’s meticulous coaching and tactically demanding system, Szalai would have rapidly developed into a top-level centre-back. Bielsa was renowned for improving players—he transformed the likes of Kalvin Phillips, Patrick Bamford, Luke Ayling, and Jack Harrison into Premier League standouts, all of whom struggled to maintain the same level once they left his tutelage. If Szalai had joined Bielsa’s Leeds, he could have followed a path similar to Ben White or Raphinha—players who thrived in Bielsa’s system before making big-money moves to elite clubs.

Instead, Szalai remained at Fenerbahce, and while he continued to play regularly, his development may have stagnated. By the time he finally made his move to the Bundesliga in 2023, it was already seen as somewhat overdue. Unfortunately, his spell at Hoffenheim was nothing short of disastrous. He played just seven Bundesliga games in 18 months, including a forgettable debut in which he scored an own goal and was substituted at halftime. That performance set the tone for what would be a difficult spell in Germany. Hoffenheim, having invested significantly in Szalai as one of their most expensive signings ever, quickly lost faith in him. He was loaned out to Freiburg, where he also struggled for game time, and now, at 27, he finds himself loaned out again—this time to Standard Liège in Belgium.

Under Bielsa, he would have received world-class tactical coaching, been part of a high-intensity system that suited aggressive defenders, and played in the Premier League, where his profile could have skyrocketed. Instead, he finds himself having to rebuild his career at an age where he should be entering his prime.

Hoffenheim’s managing director Andreas Schicker acknowledged Szalai’s professionalism despite his struggles, noting that his character was never in question—only his ability to perform at the required level. That professionalism might still serve him well as he looks to make the most of his loan spell at Standard Liège. However, unless he can rediscover the form that once made him a sought-after talent, his career risks becoming another example of a player who failed to capitalize on his early promise.
