Sunderland AFC head coach Régis Le Bris singled out teenage midfielder Chris Rigg for praise following the club’s narrow 1–0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion at the Stadium of Light.
While the result marked Sunderland’s third successive home league defeat, Le Bris insisted Rigg’s performance offered a bright spot on a frustrating afternoon for the Black Cats.
Rigg Grabs His Chance
With injuries ruling out key players including Enzo Le Fée and Nilson Angulo, the Sunderland boss handed 18-year-old Rigg a rare Premier League start.
It was his first start in the competition since Sunderland’s defeat to Brentford FC earlier in the season, and the youngster almost marked the occasion with a goal.
Early in the second half, Rigg finished confidently past Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen after a loose ball fell kindly inside the penalty area.
However, celebrations were cut short when VAR ruled the goal out for offside after determining that defender Omar Alderete had been in an offside position when he headed the free kick into Rigg’s path.
Despite the disappointment, Le Bris was impressed by the teenager’s reaction and performance.
“I’m really pleased because he’s a good example of what we’re building here at the club,” Le Bris said.

Le Bris highlighted Rigg as a perfect example of Sunderland’s commitment to developing young talent.
The midfielder, who came through the club’s academy system, has faced several challenges this season but has continued to push himself in training.
Earlier in the campaign, Rigg endured a difficult moment during Sunderland’s match against Aston Villa when he was substituted shortly after a red card incident involving the team.

“He accepted the situation, kept pushing and showed every day in training that he wants to become a better player,” the Sunderland boss explained.

The Sunderland manager believes the final third remains the most challenging part of the game for young attacking players to master.
“For an offensive player, the final third is the hardest to develop,” Le Bris said.
However, he also pointed out that Rigg’s versatility makes him a valuable asset for the team.
The 18-year-old can operate in several positions across midfield and attack, including as a No.8, No.10 or even on the wing.
His relentless work rate and commitment have already earned the trust of his manager.
Brighton Capitalise on Sunderland Frustration
Despite Sunderland’s promising moments, Brighton ultimately secured all three points.
The decisive moment came shortly after Rigg’s disallowed goal.
Brighton winger Yankuba Minteh delivered what appeared to be a mishit cross that unexpectedly looped over Sunderland goalkeeper Melker Ellborg and into the net.
The fortunate strike proved enough to seal victory for the visitors.
Following the goal, Sunderland struggled to create clear chances as they searched for an equaliser.
Injuries Continue to Hurt Sunderland
Le Bris also pointed to Sunderland’s growing injury list as a major challenge for the team.
The squad remains relatively small and inexperienced, with several key players unavailable at a crucial stage of the season.
Despite those setbacks, Sunderland have already achieved an important milestone by reaching 40 Premier League points, a total that typically ensures safety from relegation.
For Le Bris, the current circumstances provide valuable learning opportunities for his young squad.
“It’s a young group and many of them are experiencing the Premier League for the first time,” he said.
“They need to go through these situations to improve.”
Patience Needed for Sunderland’s Young Squad
Le Bris urged supporters to remain patient and continue supporting the team as the players gain experience.
He believes the development of talents like Chris Rigg shows that Sunderland are building something promising for the future.
“If you compare how Chris played at the beginning of the season and now, you can see the improvement,” Le Bris said.
“He needs time and support.”
The Sunderland manager also stressed that improvements must come collectively, particularly in attack where the team must create more opportunities.

Although the defeat to Brighton was disappointing, Le Bris believes Sunderland can still finish the season strongly.
The manager remains confident that with continued work on pressing, crossing and shooting, the team’s attacking output will improve.
