Maximilian Wöber’s time at Leeds United has been nothing short of a frustrating saga for both the player and the club. Since arriving at Elland Road from Red Bull Salzburg in January 2023, the Austrian defender has struggled with persistent injuries, inconsistency, and an inability to establish himself as a key figure in Daniel Farke’s side. His latest injury setback has only compounded Leeds’ woes, leaving many to question whether the club should have taken the opportunity to sell him when they had the chance.
A Disappointing Spell at Leeds
Wöber’s tenure at Leeds United began with promise, arriving as a versatile defender capable of playing at both centre-back and left-back. He initially showed signs of promise under Jesse Marsch, but as Leeds spiraled toward relegation from the Premier League in the 2022/23 season, his performances became less impactful. His struggles continued into the Championship campaign under Farke, where he failed to cement a regular place in the starting XI.
At the start of the 2024/25 season, Wöber found himself on the fringes of the squad, making only a handful of appearances. He was an unused substitute in Leeds’ opening fixtures before finally featuring in a six-minute cameo against Swansea City on November 24. Despite a rare goal in a 2-0 win over Derby County in December, his involvement remained minimal. The emergence of Joe Rodon as a leader in the backline alongside Pascal Struijk meant that Wöber became surplus to requirements, further diminishing his prospects at the club.
Injury Woes and Missed Opportunities
Injuries have played a significant role in Wöber’s struggles. His first major setback came at the start of the season when he sustained a knee injury that required surgery in October. This kept him out for several months, further delaying his integration into the team. By the time he was fit to return, Leeds had already established a strong defensive partnership without him, making it even harder for him to reclaim a starting spot.
Even more frustrating for Leeds was the missed opportunity to offload Wöber in January. Austrian journalist Peter Linden reported in December 2024 that RB Salzburg had expressed interest in re-signing him, hoping to strengthen their defensive line. Leeds, however, were reluctant to sanction a move, perhaps due to ongoing injury concerns within the squad. The club reportedly placed a high price tag on Wöber, which ultimately led Salzburg to back away from the deal. At the time, keeping Wöber seemed like a logical decision given the team’s depth issues, but in hindsight, it appears to have been a costly mistake.
Another Major Injury Setback
Just as Wöber was working his way back into contention, disaster struck again. Ahead of Leeds’ Championship clash against Watford on February 11, Farke confirmed that Wöber would require a second knee surgery this season, ruling him out until at least the March international break. This latest setback further highlights why selling him in January would have been the wiser choice.
Leeds United now find themselves in a difficult position. Wöber remains on the books, drawing wages while contributing very little to the team’s success. His ongoing injury struggles make it unlikely that another club will be willing to take a chance on him in the near future, meaning Leeds could be stuck with an underperforming asset for the remainder of the season.
A Lesson for the Future
Leeds’ failure to offload Wöber when they had the chance is a cautionary tale. The club’s reluctance to negotiate a reasonable transfer fee with Salzburg may have been a short-term decision to maintain squad depth, but it has ultimately backfired. With Wöber sidelined once again, Leeds are left with a player who is both unreliable and unlikely to regain full fitness in time to make a meaningful impact this season.
Going forward, Daniel Farke and the Leeds hierarchy must be more proactive in managing their squad. If a player is not contributing and an opportunity arises to cash in, they should take it—especially when injuries and inconsistency are involved. The decision to keep Wöber has proven to be a costly error, and Leeds will now have to deal with the consequences of their inaction.
