Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has remained optimistic about his team’s chances of finishing in the top five despite suffering a 3–1 defeat to Manchester United on Sunday. The loss marked Villa’s third consecutive Premier League defeat, equalling their worst run under the Spanish coach.
The result leaves Villa three points behind third-placed Manchester United in the standings. However, Emery believes the race for a Champions League spot is still within his team’s control.
Speaking after the match, Emery stressed that Villa’s fate is still in their own hands. He explained that when the team was enjoying a strong run earlier in the season, they played with great confidence and it was difficult for opponents to beat them. Now that they are going through a difficult period, he said the team must remain balanced and continue working hard.
Manchester United took the lead through Casemiro before Ross Barkley equalised for Villa, bringing the visitors back into the game. Despite Villa showing some strong moments, United regained the lead when Matheus Cunha scored. Benjamin Sesko later added another goal to secure the victory for the home side.
The defeat also continued Villa’s poor record at Old Trafford under Emery, with the club now losing their last five visits to the stadium.
Earlier in the season, Villa had an 11-point lead over Manchester United in January, but their recent form has allowed their rivals to close the gap. Villa have managed just four wins in their last 12 league matches.
Despite this dip in form, Emery remains confident about the team’s chances. He said the players understand what is needed to maintain their position in the league and remain determined to improve their performances in the upcoming matches.
With several games still left to play this season, Emery believes there is plenty of time for Villa to regain their form and strengthen their push for a Champions League place. He added that both he and the players are highly motivated to finish the season strongly and maintain their position in the league standings.
