Fabian Schär opens up on ‘terrifying’ ordeal during Middle East conflict
Newcastle United defender Fabian Schär has spoken of the “most terrifying days” of his life after becoming caught up in the escalating conflict in the Middle East while rehabilitating from injury.
The Swiss centre-back had travelled to the region as part of his recovery programme after sustaining an ankle injury in January. But what was intended to be a focused spell of rehabilitation quickly turned into a frightening ordeal as tensions involving Iran intensified, with missile and drone strikes reported across parts of the Gulf.
“Truly frightening”
In a statement shared on social media, Schär revealed he had witnessed the unfolding crisis at close quarters. Accompanying his message was an image that appeared to show him sheltering in a basement alongside others as airspace closures and security warnings disrupted daily life.
“I’ve just had a few of my most terrifying days having unfortunately witnessed first-hand what’s happening in the Middle East,” he wrote. “I was there as part of my rehabilitation programme and I’m glad I found a way to get home safely. But what we experienced there, and what’s happening right now, is truly frightening.”
He also expressed concern for those still affected by the violence, adding: “I hope that help gets to all of the people who need it in those affected areas.”
Region in turmoil
The conflict has seen Iran launch retaliatory strikes against several neighbouring nations following attacks by Israel and the United States. Countries including Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Jordan and Oman have all been impacted in recent days.
The popular tourist destination of Dubai has also been targeted, prompting widespread flight cancellations and leaving thousands stranded as commercial air traffic across the region was suspended.
The UK Government has since launched efforts to assist British nationals attempting to return home, with the Foreign Office operating a 24/7 crisis centre and coordinating with airlines and regional authorities to secure safe routes out of affected areas.
Focus shifts back to recovery
Schär has now safely returned home, though he is expected to remain sidelined for approximately three months following the ankle injury sustained during Newcastle’s 4-3 victory over Leeds in early January.
While his immediate focus will be on regaining full fitness and supporting his teammates from afar, the experience has clearly left a lasting impression. For a player accustomed to high-pressure Premier League encounters, the real-life danger he faced off the pitch offered a sobering reminder of the fragility of normal life.
As Newcastle continue their campaign, Schär’s safe return will come as a relief to the club and its supporters — even as he and many others reflect on a deeply unsettling chapter far removed from football.
